Talking about funeral costs isn’t easy, however it’s one of the most important conversations families can have. New research shows the average cost of a UK funeral has risen to £4,285, while the total cost of dying (including professional fees, flowers and catering) now sits at £9,797. (Source: SunLife Cost of Dying Report 2025.) For many families, this is a significant expense at an already difficult time.

How people are paying

Most people (68%) do make some provision, such as savings, a funeral plan or life insurance. But only 56% of people manage to cover the full amount. That leaves loved ones to bridge the gap through credit cards, loans or even selling belongings. It’s not surprising that many families feel a financial strain when paying for a funeral. This can sometimes impact mental health, physical wellbeing or day-to-day living costs.

Why planning ahead matters

One of the strongest messages in the report is that small steps taken early can make a big difference later. Families who had conversations in advance about wishes, such as preferred type of funeral or keeping the service simple, often felt less stress both financially and emotionally.
