When people think about funeral directing, they rarely look beyond the funeral service itself. Austin’s Family Funeral Directors is a team of people working quietly and compassionately to support families through one of life’s most difficult moments. Our role is more involved than you may think! Our team works together seamlessly to care for families and their loved ones with professionalism and kindness.

Every day and every family are different. We are proud of how our team members work together to ensure every family – and their loved one – receives the care and attention they deserve at such a difficult time.

Supporting families with compassion

The support from the Austin’s team begins from the very first phone call. This is usually an emotional time involving sadness, uncertainty and sometimes shock. We offer calm and reassuring information and advice, and are available 24/7 to bring someone into our care.

Listening carefully to each family’s wishes is one of the most important parts of our role and our team often helps families to make difficult decisions. From choosing the type of service and respecting beliefs and traditions to arranging personal touches, we guide you through the process. Importantly, we ensure you never feel rushed or overwhelmed, blending our compassion with our organisational skills.

Behind the scenes, we’re in touch with celebrants, officiants, florists and service venues to ensure every detail comes together smoothly. There’s a lot to organise and coordinate!

Caring for the deceased with dignity

Caring for the person who has died is also at the heart of what we do. Bringing someone into our care, from home, hospital or a care home, and looking after them with respect and dignity is a responsibility we take seriously.

We also support families who wish to visit their loved one before the funeral, creating a peaceful and comforting environment during an emotional time. Chapels of rest are available at all of our funeral offices across Herts. In addition to normal office hours, you may arrange to visit your loved one during evenings and at weekends.

Managing details behind the scenes

Organisation is a huge part of our role, even though much of it happens quietly in the background. Our team manages timings, transport, paperwork and unexpected changes that can arise at any moment. Remaining calm under pressure is essential, particularly when families are relying on us for reassurance and guidance.

Guiding the funeral day

From leading the cortege team to coordinating with venues and officiants, the Austin’s team ensures the service runs smoothly and respectfully. While families focus on saying goodbye, we take care of the practical details.

An emotional role

Supporting grieving families and carrying the emotional weight of our role can be challenging. However, it’s deeply meaningful and fulfilling too. We feel privileged to help families honour a loved one’s life and create a personal farewell that truly reflects their wishes.

Ultimately, our role as funeral directors is about people. It involves compassion, trust, dignity and being there for families when they need support the most. We’ve been supporting families across Herts for over 300 years and still love what we do. If we can help you, please contact us.
