As funeral directors, we’re often asked about what to wear to a funeral.

Funerals are emotional, important occasions. Many people worry about getting it wrong … about standing out for the wrong reasons. In recent years, funeral attire has become much more flexible, although tradition still plays an important role for many families. Some funeral invitations include a dress code with the details of a person’s funeral. It’s important to dress respectfully and thoughtfully.

Attending a traditional funeral

Traditionally, funeral clothing in the UK is formal. Black remains the most common colour choice. People attending funerals also wear dark colours such as dark grey or navy. These are the safest colour options.

If you are attending a traditional funeral, wearing smart clothes is best. Men often wear a black tie to funerals. Shoes should be clean and smart rather than casual, avoiding trainers or overly bright footwear.

Traditional dress is still especially common for:

  • Religious services
  • Older generations
  • Formal church funerals
  • Military or ceremonial funerals

However, funerals are increasingly reflecting personal celebrations of life and you may not need to wear traditional clothing. (Read our article: ‘Say Goodbye Your Way’.) You should be told about this when receiving details of the funeral.

Personalised funeral dress codes

It’s increasingly common for mourners to be asked to wear bright colours, football shirts, floral patterns or even fancy dress themes. While this can feel unusual, these requests are usually deeply meaningful to the family. They reflect the personality, life and often the choice of their loved one.

For example, you may be asked to wear colourful clothing instead of black, perhaps choosing something in the person’s favourite colour. An avid sports fan may want guests to wear football shirts or their team’s colours. Others simply prefer a less sombre atmosphere and may request mourners not to wear black.

If the family has made a request, it’s always best to follow it where possible, showing respect and support.

“If in doubt” advice

f you’re unsure what to wear, keep your clothing smart and simple:

  • Choose smart, comfortable clothing.
  • Stick to neutral or darker colours.
  • Avoid anything very casual.
  • Bring a coat or umbrella if the service includes time outdoors.

Usually, you are not expected to dress in black unless requested.

If you are attending a religious or cultural funeral, it’s best to check the dress code expectations. For example, Hindu funeral traditions typically involve white clothing and Sikh funerals may require head coverings. (White Rose) If in doubt, please ask.

An important point about what to wear to a funeral

Families are far more concerned with the presence and support of loved ones than with clothing choices.

A funeral is about paying respects, sharing memories and supporting one another through a difficult time. Wearing something thoughtful and appropriate simply helps reflect the care and respect you’re already bringing by attending.
