What is a living coffin?

The Loop Living Cocoon™ is a mushroom coffin grown from the root network of fungi (mycelium) and hemp fibres. It is a “living coffin”, grown in mould in a climate-controlled room. Each mushroom coffin includes a moss lining and pillow. They take a week to fully form. Best of all, they are 100% natural and completely biodegradable.

Loop Biotech in the Netherlands developed these groundbreaking coffins.

How does a mushroom coffin work with nature?

The material used to grow the coffin – mycelium – breaks down the organic coffin material, changing it into soil-enriching nutrients. This also quickens the body’s return to the earth.

Once buried, mushroom coffins take around 45 days to become part of the soil. This is a big difference from traditional wooden caskets, which take up to 50 years to break down.

Eco-friendly funerals are increasingly popular, with 18% of people actively considering the environmental impact when planning a funeral. A mushroom coffin fits with this demand.

Beyond helping nature, the coffin offers practical features, such as properties that make it suitable for outdoor funerals in the rain and integrated handles.

Dignity and care for the deceased and the environment

Mushroom coffins offer a caring option, balancing people and the environment by:

  • nourishing the soil,
  • regenerating nature, and
  • minimising the impact of a person’s funeral on the planet.

Many people find comfort knowing they will be returned to nature when they die, contributing to the “circle of life”.

An ideal coffin for natural burial grounds

The mushroom coffin is fully tested and verified by the Funeral Furnishing Manufacturers’ Association (FFMA) for both traditional burials, cremations and natural woodland burials. To get the full eco-friendly, soil-enriching benefits of the mycelium, the mushroom coffin is ideal for natural burial grounds.

Austin’s Funeral Directors offers a beautiful natural burial park set within the grounds of Harwood Park on the outskirts of Stevenage (this is exclusive to Austin’s). The landscape is left as a wildflower and native grass meadow shaded by mature London Plane trees, encouraging local biodiversity and wildlife.
