Direct cremations are increasingly popular in the UK. This involves a cremation without a funeral service, with the ashes of the deceased person subsequently delivered to the family.
In 2018, just 2% of UK funerals were direct cremations. Fast forward to 2023 … 18% of funerals are direct cremations and they continue to grow in popularity. Understandably, people choose this option for simplicity and cost saving (compared with a traditional funeral).
Recent research states only 47% of us want a funeral when we’re gone. Reasons against a funeral are:
- I could spend the money a better way (67%)
- I don’t see the point (55%)
- I don’t want a traditional service (43%)

There are options to explore. Firstly, so many choices are available when planning a funeral and many are cost effective. This could involve the wake location, choice of coffin or use of floral tributes, for example. While it’s always important to respect the wishes of the deceased person, loved ones should be considered too. In many ways, a funeral is about the deceased person and is for the relatives and friends left behind.
How do funerals help loved ones?
- Grief. A funeral reinforces the person has died. Grief often involves shock and denial. A funeral service offers a chance to show grief, allowing feelings to surface. It’s also an opportunity to share feelings and thoughts with others. This is an important part of the grieving process, reinforcing the reality that someone has died and helping people adjust to their loss.
- Goodbyes. Saying goodbye at a funeral often helps those grieving the death of a loved one. It enables a degree of acceptance that life is different now.
- Guidance and support are crucial during grief. A funeral brings people together, providing the opportunity to guide and support each other. This can extend beyond the funeral service to the following weeks and months as loved ones create a ‘new normal’ in their lives.
