Introducing Austin's Natural Burial park

Natural burial is a sustainable alternative to traditional burial and cremation. It is a better choice for the environment with minimal impact on the planet.

Looking for a natural burial near you in Hertfordshire?

Our beautifully peaceful Natural Burial Park is set within the grounds of Harwood Park on the south side of Stevenage, with stunning views of the Hertfordshire countryside.

The benefits of natural burials

The natural choice

With natural burials, the emphasis is on returning the deceased to nature and making a significant contribution to ‘the circle of life’. Only natural products are used, and the exclusion of chemicals, often used in the preparation of the deceased, means harmful substances are not polluting the soil.

A natural burial park is managed but not manicured. The pollination of natural plants, grasses and wildflowers is encouraged.

The area is a biodiverse environment for wildlife and remains an attractive setting for future generations to visit in the years ahead.

Our Natural Burial Park

After the development of Harwood Park Crematorium in 1997, John Austin had the vision to offer a tranquil site for burial as well as cremation for the communities in the surrounding areas that the Austin family has served since the 1700’s.

The grounds, in total, extend to twenty-five acres and have been planted with numerous varieties of trees including oak, hornbeam, horse chestnut, silver birch and stunning cherry trees.

The area dedicated to the Natural Burial Park is left to meadow but is planted with mature London Plane trees. A hybrid of the American Sycamore and the Oriental Plane, the London Plane was first discovered in the 17th century and widely planted in the 18th century.

This is important to us as our history as funeral directors dates back to the same period.
