Funerals and memorial services are becoming increasingly personalised. This includes the location involved. Research shows that 73% of people would choose a non-traditional location for a funeral, such as a beauty spot, football ground or their own garden. You can hold funeral services almost anywhere!

The most popular non-traditional locations most people would consider are:

  1. In the countryside
  2. On a beach
  3. At a favourite beauty spot
  4. By a lake
  5. By a river
  6. Out at sea
  7. On a mountain
  8. In my garden
  9. At my house
  10. Football ground

Some more unusual location requests include a betting shop, a zoo and even a London bus. 48% of people have attended a funeral in a non-traditional location in the last year. (Source: Funeral Trends Media Report 2024) It’s a growing trend!

Arranging a non-traditional location

Firstly, talk to your funeral director about the options and arrangement involved. The friendly team at Austin’s is very happy to help. We’ve been helping people plan funerals for over 300 years. Nothing will phase us and our aim is to support you in arranging the funeral you want for your loved one.

  • Venue

If a venue hosts gatherings such as weddings and memorials, a funeral service should be possible. Remember some venues may not be accessible during winter months or available at certain times of the year (such as sports seasons).

  • Logistics

Unusual places sometimes have unusual addresses! Everyone attending the funeral needs to know how to get to the venue from the church or crematorium. Transport and parking options are very helpful.

  • Catering

Catering at most venues will be offered via an in-house team and usually involves a price per head.

An unusual funeral location usually reflects the lifestyle and/or wishes of the deceased. For example, the dress code (such as colour or sports team shirts) and the choice of music and flowers can continue this personalisation.

Alternative venues offer a funeral that’s truly meaningful to the person and their loved ones. Do you have a place in mind for your own funeral? Talk about it with your loved ones so they can give you the send off you’d like.
