Austins's Funeral directors supports teens unite

Austin’s Charity of the Year 2023

Austin’s Funeral Directors is a proactive, charity-minded organisation. Each year, we link to a local charity and support their activities. For 2023, we are delighted to announce that our chosen charity is… Teens Unite.

This Hoddesdon-based charity supports young people aged 13-24 who are fighting cancer. It supports them through the long term, often hidden impacts of diagnosis and treatment.

Studies show that three in four young people aged 16 to 25 years have experienced at least one mental health problem where they have been diagnosed with cancer.

Almost half of the young people who face mental health struggles following their cancer diagnosis do not have access to support for their mental health and emotional wellbeing. And many say that leaving the security of the hospital environment is as daunting as the diagnosis and treatment itself. Being clear of cancer and expected to return to “normal” place a heavy burden on the young people.

Founded in 2007, Teens Unite comes in, hosting a series of online and in-person events where cancer is not what makes the young people different, but what unites them. Emphasis is placed upon connections and community.

What’s evolved is an inclusive family with a fun-loving and determined approach and a community whose support crosses the boundaries of age. It crosses the boundaries of gender, ethnicity, religion, social class, and education. This very special community’s strength lies in the thing that unites them, their common experience facing a life-threatening illness in their teenage and young adult years.

At Teens Unite, the ‘C word’ doesn’t hold beneficiaries back. The young people meet others, like them, who genuinely understand what it is like to face cancer, but the focus is always positive, motivational, and fun!

The Austin’s team is proud to support such a hard working and deserving charity. We look forward to working with Teens Unite during 2023.
